Artist Story
Searching for a better story
Shaped by over 25 years of working and living in some of the toughest communities around the world, Nigel brings to his artistic work formative experiences of the human condition. He wrestles with questions of meaning, hope, and finds inspiration derived from individual and collective action overcoming injustice and hardship.
Nigel cites his creative influences amongst others as the New York abstract expressionist movement of the 1950s, and the visual works of August Stringberg and Joseph M W Turner.
Nigel (b67) was born in Wigan, a former coal mining and textile town in the Northwest of England. Leaving school at 16, he later went on to study theology in London and Philadelphia, and holds a MBA from the University of Liverpool. The artist is also founder of calyah, a design and craft company that brings together award winning designers with artisans from underserved communities.
INigel is married to Christina and they have three daughters, Sofia, Emilia, and Daniella.
The artist is photographed in front of his work "Squall", acrylic on canvas, 150cm x 100cm.
The Mountains
The mountains and the sea is where Nigel finds his creative calm from which inspiration flows. These are places to discover awe and wonder. Nigel lives in the Jungfrau region in the Swiss Alps overlooking the North face of the Eiger, which is also provides the context for his cowZstory project.
And the Sea
Nigel spends part of the year on Sweden´s south coast, where he cold water swims. Spending up to 1h45mins in water temperature that can go as low as 2 degree Celsius, Nigel find inspiration for his Öresund painting and photographic work.
The cold water swimming process helps cleanse his mind and body resulting in new perspectives and creative vision. The experience serves as a kind of reset button.
